We welcome input on each of these subject areas.
We are accumulating details that apply to developing these elements in Santa Monica.

There are vehicles that can be used to replace trips in automobiles for use in your community. They let you do errands, local commutes to work and school, trips to sports and entertainment activities and many things that do not require a car.

The vehicles are lighter and smaller than automobiles, which means they require less space for parking and use less energy to get the job done. They do the short trips that are often done when your car is cold and still warming up. Using a cold gas engine means producing the worst emissions and getting the lowest miles per gallon. These neighborhood vehicles do not have these problems and are a strong clean air solution as a result
The smallest of these vehicles help solve the congestion problems. The two wheel vehicles can move past the long rows of cars that get stopped during heavy commutes. They can get you home in a fraction of the time needed to drive a car. The easy parking means time savings even when traffic is flowing.

The mobility scooters are an alternative that can be used by people with physical challenges and are a good alternative for seniors who need to get around but have become a hazard to themselves and others when behind the wheel of a car.

There is a range of neighborhood transport vehicles that do not produce local emissions. These include:
Bicycles Electric Bicycles Electric Motor Scooters
Neighborhood Electric Vehicles Segways Mobility Scooters
Electric Motorcycles Electric Skateboards Electric Utility Vehicles

There are other neighbor hood vehicles that run on gasoline that can still help in many of the same ways as the less polluting kind. These include:

Motor scooters Motorcycles Mopeds
Compact Utility Vehicles (like the parking enforcement people use)

These have all been given higher emissions standards in the last three years. It is worthwhile to invest in the newer models so that you get a cleaner burning vehicle.

In addition these fuel-burning vehicles will eventually be able to use renewable fuels as described above. Building the demand now will speed up that possibility.
Mass transit has proven to be one of the most efficient and potentially the cleanest way to provide people transportation needs.

Underground and elevated Trains can solve the need for high speed travel from one community to another more effectively than cars under congested urban conditions. We need to get both the Expo line and the Wilshire line implemented as quickly as possible. In addition there is a need for an effective north south route that parallels the 405.

High-speed surface trains are needed to tie our statewide metropolitan areas together. These are the best alternative to the high pollution level associated with air travel

Getting to express mass transit can often be done more efficiently and in less time by using neighborhood vehicles than by waiting for several connecting buses. This means using these modes of travel for the first mile(s) to the mass transit and for the last mile(s) from the transit to your final destination. First mile/last mile is an important area for discussion and improvement.

All train systems need to tie into and accommodate connections with all forms of sustainable transport. This means providing parking and charging facilities for all neighborhood transport modes as well as providing ways to allow the light weight vehicles to travel with the passengers for use at both the start and the destination of the trip. This means letting bicycles and mobility scooters onto buses and trains as well as letting electric mopeds and things like Segways onto trains.
