The people connected by the Sustainable Transport Club network conducted surveys of EV drivers at two events for National Plug in Day. The idea was to get EV drivers to identify the locations in both Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties where they need and would use EV charging stations.

There is a list of both the locations identified and the votes for each of them at the end of this article. This may not be a comprehensive list and the survey is more anecdotal than scientific, but it represents a good starting place for the build-out of the infrastructure.

The survey in Ventura produced a substantial number of votes for a reasonably long list of locations. The locations are fairly specific and it covers the whole county.

The list has a good focus on several general areas. There are strong groups of both malls and shopping centers. Most of the parking lots identified are adjacent to shopping areas and entertainment. There are a good number of votes for beach and recreation areas. The recreations areas are typically the ones that people drive some distance to and where people spend a reasonably long time.

The list is still open to additional locations. Additional votes are welcome as they will increase the focus on any suggested location. Please take a look and see if you want to add anything to this effort.

Voting is fine even if you live outside the counties. Our visitors know where they go and when they would need to charge their vehicles. If you do suggest something please tell us what sort of EV you drive and how long you have driven EVs of any kind. Newbies and soon to be EV drivers are welcome to chime in as well – just give us an idea of your interests.
Some Drivers want Charging Stations and
Some, not so much

There was a striking difference between the responses in Ventura verses Santa Barbara. The Ventura drivers were eager to tell us where they wanted charging stations and often had several in mind. The Santa Barbara people were pretty unconcerned and had a generally low level of urgency. Most of them wanted chargers in Ventura and places outside their immediate area.

After talking to a few of the drivers it became apparent that they hardly ever have to look for charging stations. They seem to stay mostly in the southern Santa Barbara County area. That area is such that you can travel the whole area in a day and not need more range than any LEAF, Fit or Fiat would provide. Home charging was taking care of the drivers’ just fine. The suggested locations would be nice for the occasional busy days driving. They were interested in having DC fast chargers to allow them to travel to LA and San Luis Obispo including one in Ventura.

The Tesla drivers in Santa Barbara were wondering why we were doing the survey – basically they seemed to think they already had what they need. The impression was that the Tesla Super charger build-out would take care of them in short order.

The conclusion was that the main charging station needs in Santa Barbara are for visitors coming from out of the area. That means stations within five blocks of any and all visitor destinations. Hotels would probably do well to consider charging stations for their guests.

Special thanks goes out to Mary Joyce Ivers on two counts. She pretty much ran the survey in Oxnard for Ventura County. Plus she has already installed more chargers in really good locations than anyone in the County. She set up the ten stations in the City of Ventura. Their locations, fees and ease of operation set the standard in our area.

If anyone is interested in doing a survey for another area please get in touch. We can help get word out and let you know what worked and did not work with our approach.

We are going to keep this survey going untill we have the infrastructure we need. Please feel free to send us an EMail with any information you might have about your needs for EV charging on the Central Coast.

You can add your vote to this list of sites.
You can send us a new location to add to this list.
You can send us information about people to contact at any one of these locations

We will do our best to convey all of that to the people who can help to get chargers at the locations you can benefit from.

We are also going to start having gatherings of EV drivers to discuss all of this and more. Please sign up to get the newsletter if you are not already recieving it so we can let you know about that.
